What to Expect After Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) and Tips for Minimizing Scarring.

  Abdominoplasty, commonly known as Tummy Tuck, is a procedure that removes excess fat and skin from your abdominal wall which tightens the muscles, creating a flatter appearance in your abdomen. It is suitable for both men and women whose health condition allows for the operation. Abdominoplasty can be considered for many different reasons. Most patients who decide on or are advised to have a Tummy Tuck have excess skin on the abdominal area, stretch marks below the belly button, split abdominal muscles or stubborn belly fat after several pregnancies, significant weight loss, or another deformation. There is sometimes confusion about getting rid of the excess belly fat with a Tummy Tuck. Even though you may lose some belly fat with this operation, it is not the same as liposuction. Notwithstanding, you may choose to get liposuction along with a Tummy Tuck

  Undoubtedly, in the decision-making process to get the operation, one of the processes that patients feel unsure about is the recovery process. One such concern is whether or not the incision scar from the operation will remain on the patient’s abdomen or how prominent the scar will be. The scar that will form from the operation is directly proportional to the size of the incision, which can change according to which procedure you choose.

  Depending on the needs of each patient, there are different types of Tummy Tucks that may be more suitable. First of all is the Full, also known as the Standard Tummy Tuck, which improves both upper and lower abdomen of the patient. This incorporates a low waist incision positioned in such a way that it can be easily hidden by underwear, bikini bottoms or other swimsuits. By the same token, the Extended Tummy Tuck involves a longer incision than the Full Tummy Tuck and it is most effective for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight. Another type is the Mini Tummy Tuck which only addresses the lower abdomen. The incision is small, just in between the hipbones. Whichever procedure the patient chooses, there is not much difference in terms of the recovery process.

  There are two stages of the recovery process after a Tummy Tuck. The first part is the critical 6 weeks after the operation. It is natural that you want to go back to your daily life although it is important that you give your body the enough time to heal. Keep in mind that the recovery process after any kind of surgical operations may differ for each patient. Once you leave the hospital after the operation, you will be given the first stage of aftercare instructions. When the patient completes the first stage of the recovery successfully, the incisions will be completely healed. Actual results, however, will take longer to be seen. During this period, you should follow some steps and instructions to minimize the scar and help it to fade in time.

Here are some tips for minimizing the scar after Abdominoplasty;
  • Follow the aftercare instructions carefully.
